Does Your Home Need HVAC Duct Cleaning?

You may be familiar with the advantages of having your home’s heating and air conditioning systems serviced regularly. But what about your ducts? HVAC duct cleaning can build on the benefits of furnace and AC maintenance, improving both air quality and the operation of your heating and cooling systems.

Air duct cleaning is different from regular preventive maintenance, though. It’s generally not needed every year. Keep reading to learn when you need to do it, the benefits to expect, and how the process works.

Signs that your Westchester home needs HVAC duct cleaning

Experts say that not every home needs HVAC duct cleaning every year. Especially if you have a relatively new home or the ducts have been replaced recently. Here’s when you should consider having it done:

• Your ducts are clogged with dust and debris. You may not be able to see all the way inside, but if you remove grille covers and see layers of dust, your ducts probably need cleaning.
• There is evidence of mold and/or excess humidity. Do you have musty odors that seem to be coming from your ducts, or get worse when the heat and/or AC is running? Does your home get very humid even with the AC on? Your ducts may be filled with damp layers of dust, which is a breeding ground for mold and mildew.
• There is evidence of pests or vermin. If you hear scratching noises or smell foul odors coming from your ducts, you may have mice, insects, or even birds nesting in there.
• You have allergy sufferers in your home. If you or a family member is allergic to dust or mold, getting HVAC duct cleaning is a helpful step that can improve your symptoms.

What are the benefits of home duct cleaning?

Obviously removing dust and grime from your ducts improves the cleanliness of the air circulating throughout your home. But there are more benefits of HVAC duct cleaning you might not know about:

• Improve furnace and AC operation.  When your air ducts are clean, that improves the flow of air through your heating and cooling systems, which makes them work more efficiently and effectively to control temperatures in your home.
• Reduce energy bills.  With better air flow, your equipment runs less and uses less electricity and fuel. That saves you money on your utility bills.
• Reduce dust on surfaces.  When there’s less dust in your ducts and in the air, there’s less to settle on your home’s surfaces. So you may notice that you don’t need to dust as often.
• Eliminate odors.  Heating and AC duct cleaning gets rid of those musty odors caused by dust, debris, moisture and even mold in your ducts.
• Uncover duct leaks & poor duct design.  When your ducts are inspected and cleaned, your technician may discover holes or cracks that leak conditioned air. He may also find evidence of poor duct design, such as too many bends or long duct runs, that cause areas in the home that don’t get enough heat or AC. Fixing these issues will improve the comfort of your home.

What does the process involve?

HVAC duct cleaning is a straightforward process that can usually be performed in two to four hours, depending on the size of your home.

The process starts with an inspection. We use cameras that can get far inside your ducts to inspect their condition and look for accumulated dust, moisture, evidence of pests and/or mildew growth.

Next, we use specialized equipment and cleaners to vacuum out dust and debris without causing damage to the ducts.

If we find mold inside your ducts, it may be necessary to apply biocides to kill the mold.

Finally, we clean your supply and return vents.
