How to Shop for an HVAC Company in Westchester

Choosing an HVAC company in Westchester can be more challenging than you may expect. Residential HVAC contractors are not all equally qualified, and going with the first company you find on the internet may be a decision you’ll regret. So how can you find a service provider you can count on?

Start by looking for:

  • Trucks in your area. If you see them often, it’s a sign that people are happy with their service.
  • Recommendations from neighbors. Nothing beats first-hand recommendations from customers.
  • Reviews online. Avoid a company with many scathing reviews. It’s ok to see some negative reviews (it’s suspicious if there are only glowing ones). But the company should respond and try to make things right.

When you call a company for residential HVAC repair or HVAC installation, here are 10 questions you should ask to properly vet a service provider.

10 questions to help you choose the right HVAC company in Westchester

1. What services does your company provide?

You probably only need one type of service right now, such as HVAC repair or new system installation. But it’s a great idea to hire a company that provides a range of services you need for your home.

If you hire a company that only does HVAC installations, then what happens if you have a problem with the system? You’re better off with a company that also does repairs and maintenance. You can trust their advice because they have no reason to steer you toward the only service they provide.

And, you can develop a trusted relationship with a company that knows you and your home. You can call them when you need other services, such as plumbing or generator installation, without having to do the research all over again.

2. How long have you been in business?

Be wary of new startups that might not be around to service what they install. Look for a company that has been serving the Westchester area for many years and has earned an excellent reputation with homeowners.

3. Is your company adequately insured to work in my home?

This is an important consideration that many homeowners overlook. If yours is a high-value residence with luxury furnishings and finishes, you need to be sure the company carries enough insurance to work in your home. If you don’t ask the question, you may find yourself in a bad situation if something valuable gets damaged.

4. What certifications do your technicians have?

Here in NY state and throughout the US, technicians who work with refrigerants (such as HVAC technicians) are required to earn EPA 608 certification. This certification means they have been trained in safe handling of refrigerant chemicals. Make sure any HVAC company you hire has technicians who are EPA 608 certified.

5. What new HVAC technology should I consider?

If you are looking to replace your heating and/or air conditioning system, it’s important to choose a company that’s up on the latest technology. Be wary when they only offer a newer version of your old system.

You’re making a choice that you’ll live with for at least a decade. So you want the latest and greatest so it provides optimal comfort conditions for as long as possible.

6. What type of warranties and guarantees do you provide?

Many HVAC installers only provide manufacturers’ warranties to cover the equipment itself. That’s standard. But especially for a luxury home, look for a guarantee on labor costs, ideally for one year. That way, if there is any problem with the installation or repair work, you’re not forced to pay extra to get it fixed.

7. How do I know I can trust your technicians?

When you allow a technician into your home, you need to be sure they are both safe and qualified. Look for a company that does their due diligence in hiring and training technicians:

  • Background checks
  • Safety training and use of protective equipment
  • Professional appearance
  • Processes that make you safer, such as alerting you about who’s coming in advance, and keeping your payment details secure.

8. How much training do your technicians get?

Do you want your HVAC issues fixed right the first time? Then choose a company that invests in ongoing training for all technicians, even the ones who have decades of experience. It’s important that they keep up with the latest tools, methods, and equipment technology.

Also, ask about the experience requirements for a technician going on appointments alone. Don’t hire a company that sends out unqualified apprentices on their own.

9. Can you send me your standard maintenance contract?

When you hire an HVAC company in Westchester (or anywhere, really), ideally you want to build a relationship for the long term. If you need a repair or new system now, you’ll need maintenance in the future to keep your system working well. So ask to see the company’s maintenance agreement

You can learn a lot about how they do business. Look for a contract that’s clear about what’s included and what’s not, and isn’t loaded with technical jargon or legalese.

10. Can you provide references?

If you’re satisfied with the answers you get to the questions above, you can feel confident about the company’s services. But talking to a reference can remove any lingering doubts. But don’t just talk to anyone. Make sure it’s someone like you who has experienced similar issues, purchased equipment or had services you’re considering, and ideally with a similar home in the Westchester area.
